2013 Twice Monthly USA Cycling Time Trials

USACycling_LogoThe preliminary 2013 time trial schedule is set.

We have completed a full year of time trials and our club has decided to move forward with a twice-monthly series in 2013. Thanks to the effort of our members recruitment efforts and the recent alliance with the Hunter’s Creek Triathlon club we are seeing much larger (and growing) attendance numbers.

With the growth, there were some changes necessary. These are some of the issues:

  • Liability insurance has become a necessity
  • Emergency services need to be added, or at least coordinated with local authorities
  • Being sanctioned by an overseeing body will help us improve and be more professional

The answer we came up with was to join USA Cycling as a racing team, and list our events with them as sanctioned events. The USA Cycling people have been very helpful, cooperative and worked on their vacation to help us. Many thanks to Keith Creeden and Stuart Lamp for their extra efforts to assist us.

Although sanctioning the events occurs an expense to the club and the riders, there was no other viable way to get liability insurance otherwise. The closest we found was a General Liability policy that cost $3500 a year PLUS an extra fee for each event.

Instead, we have paid a club/team membership fee and an event fee for the year, totaling about $250. In addition we will be paying $3 per rider per event. So to recover these costs we will ask for an entry fee per event of $10 per rider. If there is extra money at the end of the year we will either spend it on club equipment, expenses or donate it to one of our charities. As you know, this is a volunteer organization and no club member will be paid for these events.

Also, it will be a requirement that all riders in the events are USA Cycling members. An annual membership is $60. Alternatively, we will offer “day of event” licenses for $10, although we definitely encourage joining USA Cycling as there are many benefits.

The running of the time trials won’t change much, other than a waiver/application requirement which only takes a minute to fill out. Results will now be published on USACycling.org as well as here and on our Facebook page and group. We will be scoring by quarters, with quarterly podiums and an annual (overall) podium as well.
