Time Trial and a Trail Ride? Why Not?

Time Trial and a Trail Ride? Why Not?

Post-Time-Trial-SnowHill-Little-Econ-RiverAlthough the cold temperatures discouraged some participants in the morning time trial, the afternoon trail ride at Snow Hill / Little-Big Econ River was well attended.

The morning USA Cycling Time Trial was rather chilly. Temperatures in the low 40s, combined with a stiff breeze from the Northwest definitely added “Windburn” to the normally hazard free environment we enjoy on Aerospace Parkway. Still, out of the five riders who (bravely) competed, four were first timers at our event. Jim Phillips, who wins the award for our oldest racer at age 71, drove all the way from the Tampa area. Brannon Martin and Dinah Philips came and raced well, representing the new USAC club – “Team Fueled by Mila”. Chuck Peabody, a member of Orlando Runners and Riders, chose this cold day to do his first time trial. Randy Durkee returned for a second race, and is now leading the Road division.

Later that afternoon, the club had another ride scheduled at Snow Hill / Little-Big Econ River Trail. Approximately a dozen riders met at the “Jones Gate” on Snow Hill Road. Cold, windy days are a good time to trail ride, as the woods seems to not only block the wind but keep in the heat somehow. This ride was meant for riders of all levels, and indeed, we had a few first time trail riders with us. Sweepers Stuart Beal, John Tenney and ride leader Timothy Reese made sure that “no rider was left behind” as we tracked over nearly all the available trails in the Snow Hill area. Although the GPS only showed about ten and a half miles traveled, the muscles indicated about thirty. The Snow Hill / LBE Trail has some very challenging portions. “The good thing about trail riding is that you can always put a foot down and walk” Stuart Beal was heard saying to a new rider. “Don’t try anything that looks beyond your confidence.”

Next week, there is another “club supported” activity that neatly combines a time trial with a trail ride. GG Events Management is hosting their periodic time trial series right next to the Chuck Lennon MTB trail in Deleon Springs. Several club members plan to bring a TT bike for the time trial and a mountain bike to ride the Chuck Lennon trail afterwards.
